Workshop 5: Hands-on FEA for students

The student will build FEA models in either Patran-Nastran or Femap/NX -Nastran  software​ (free version for student)

  • Construction of a foundation level Finite Element Model.
  • FEA model analysis. Static and vibration analysis.


Day nineteen and twenty. Composite Finite Element Model Analysis (FEA)

Workshop 6:

The student will build FEA composite models in either Patran-Nastran or Femap/NX -Nastran software​.

  • Construction of foundation level composite materials FEA model. 
  • FEA model analysis. Static and vibration analysis

Day one and two. Composite Materials & Properties

Day three and four. Composite material properties.

Workshop 1: Calculation of composite material properties.

The student will calculate the various properties of composite materials. (Hand calculator, Excel and Mathcad)


Day five and six. Composite failure

Workshop 2: Use of Drapeability software

Day seven and eight. A manufacturing demonstration.

  • Demonstration of the manufacture of a glassfibre composite laminate.
  • Hands-on experience at manufacturing a simple laminate.

Day nine and ten. Design of composite Structures
Composite structural sizing and design by hand calculations.

Calculation of component thickness, minimum weight, stiffness and strength.
Workshop 3: Structural composite sizing
The student will calculate the laminate architecture (layup) and thickness of the composite materials part. (Hand calculator, Excel and Mathcad)

Day eleven and twelve. Composite manufacturing visit.
This will be a full day visit to a leading composite 
prototyping academic-industrial facility. You will be 
introduced to composite specialist who work on next 
generation composite concepts using a variety of 
composite material systems and their respective 
manufacturing techniques.

​​For the candidate who desires a deeper knowledge and a more thorough understanding of composites, then High Peak Courses provides you with a very credible four weeks training, allowing you to learn without the hurry. You need no prior knowledge or experience of composites, because the course is designed to introduce you gently to the essential practical aspects of design for manufacture and analysis of composite materials. 

During the course there will be live composite component manufacturing demonstrations using popular techniques and visits by specialist composite companies. 

At the end of the course you will have understanding and experience of different composite manufacturing materials systems, using glassfibre, carbonfibre, Kevlar, silicon carbide fibres and biocomposites. You will be able to design composite laminates based on strength or stiffness requirements. You will be able to make structural stress analysis of the monolithic or sandwich panel laminates using simple hand calculations.

You will construct a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) composites model and run the analysis using industrially recognised FEA software such as MSC Patran-Nastran or Femap-NX Nastran and for Femap you will receive a free 45 day licence.

The course designer started as a Stress Engineer on composites in 1984 whilst at British Aerospace and has tailored this course to provide extensive but selective information and techniques to the student that he has acquired over the decades since.
