The composite industry struggles to attract and educate new talent and most engineers are unaware of the advantages of composite materials.


Pultrusion is considered to be the most cost effective method for the manufacture of fibre reinforced composite structures. The composite items produced are composed of continuous fibres in a resin matrix. Man-made or natural fibres are used and set into a thermoset or thermoplastic resin matrix. Pultrusion is a continuous moulding process for the production of composite materials of constant cross-section shapes that include channel, flat bar, tubes etc. The pultruded items are used extensively throughout many industries to fabricate structures or to act as reinforcement. The wind energy industry uses pultrusion carbonfibre flat bar to reinforce its wind turbine blades. Power production and petro-chem cooling tower parts formed by pultruded composite elements. Rail and rail infrastructure, coach. The building and construction industry utilise pultruded composites in their structural components.

This course presents an overview of the Pultrusion process machinery and the methods of
manufacturing composite pultrusion parts. The course examines many applied and diverse pultruded examples that are used throughout a wide variety of industries. Many pultruded composite samples will be on display. Internationally recognised design considerations are highlighted relating to frames, trusses and mechanical or bonded joint techniques. The complete procedure is governed by various International safety, quality control and testing standards. These documents provide recommendations for the design, fabrication, installation, testing, and commissioning of pultruded composite constructions, originally developed by a pioneering British university and leading pultrusion company in the 1990’s.
