The composite industry struggles to attract and educate new talent and most engineers are unaware of the advantages of composite materials.


There are many engineering environments where metal pipes corrode, influencing industry to adopt composite pipes for above and below ground applications. Large diameter composite pipes are used in six basic sectors of civil infrastructure ranging from raw water supply lines for potable water to irrigation systems, with composite sewer pipes being the largest market segment.


Composite pipe systems offer superior corrosion resistance, higher stiffness and hence cover greater unsupported spans, e.g. longer pipes, higher strength to weight ratio. The low mass of composites reduces shipping and installation cost. The offshore industry has proven experience with fire water performance of lightweight composite pipes.


​This course presents an overview of the three main methods of manufacturing composite pipes and includes the design considerations of internal and external loading both static, dynamic and thermal. All piping systems require a variety of fittings and mechanical or bonded joint techniques, with the complete process governed by various international safety and quality control standards and of course minimum weight and cost. With some simple hands-on calculations, you will be able to check the design of the composite pipe.


An additional Powerpoint presentation is given. It was compiled by the world's leading manufacturer of Filament WInding Machines (for over 40 years). Their machines are used to construct major parts of the Ariane 5 rocket.
